People that chose to participate in these horrific acts mainly had originally started out being pressured to do them. The government would tell them what they needed to do, and they would do it, at first reluctantly, but slowly they become numb to what they are doing and almost enjoy themselves. This is what happened to Ishmael Beah in his book, he became numb to what he was doing and then began to enjoy himself as he killed other people.
